The Dirty Secret Behind “Done-For-You” Marketing for Service Businesses
“We handle everything. Website, SEO, ads, social media. You don’t have to think about it.”
And on paper, that sounds perfect! You’re busy. You don’t have time to learn marketing. You just want the phone to ring.
But here’s the part nobody really explains: Most of these companies aren’t actually building a strategy around your business. They’re plugging you into a pre-built system designed to work “well enough” for everyone. It might look customized on the surface, but it’s the same structure, approach, and playbook being reused across dozens of businesses. From their side, it makes sense – it’s efficient, scalable, and predictable. But from your side, you’re getting something that may or may not actually fit your business, and that gap is where results start to fall off.
You’re Not Getting Strategy – You’re Getting a Template
Most of these “smart marketing systems” promising better map coverage and rankings follow the same formula:
- A templated website
- Pre-built SEO structure
- Standard content strategy
- A reporting dashboard to show activity
On the surface, it looks solid. It feels like progress is being made. But none of it is built around your actual goals, your margins, or the kind of work you want more of. The websites all start to look the same, the messaging blends together, and before long, you’re indistinguishable from a competitor two towns over using the exact same approach. That’s when things start to fall apart.
You Might Be Funding Your Own Competition
This is usually the part that stops people in their tracks. Many of these companies are working with multiple contractors in the same geographic area -sometimes even in the exact same trade! They’re using the same system, tactics, and targeting across the board. So while you’re paying them to help you grow, they’re also helping someone else go after the same jobs. That’s not a real strategy – it’s a shared pipeline.
You Don’t Really Know What You Own
We see this ALL THE TIME. Business owners who don’t know:
- Who owns their domain
- Where their website lives
- How to access their accounts
- What they’re actually paying for
And to be clear, that’s not a knock on you. You’re running a business. You shouldn’t have to babysit your marketing. But when everything is bundled into one system, you lose visibility and control. And if you ever want to leave, it gets messy real fast.
The Reports Look Good… But What’s Actually Changing?
You’ll get a polished dashboard (that you probably won’t have time to look at or it won’t make sense), pretty reports, and updates that say things like your traffic is up, your rankings have improved, and your impressions are increasing – and sure, those things can matter. But at the end of the day, there’s really only one question that counts: are you getting more (and better) jobs? Because if you’re not, those reports are just noise.
So What’s the Right Approach?
This is where we’re different and we’re intentional about it.
We Don’t Work With Your Competitors
We typically work with one client per industry, per area – and that’s intentional. When you’re actually showing up in the community, whether it’s posting in Facebook groups, building relationships through the local Chamber, or attending networking events, we can’t authentically represent multiple competing businesses without it becoming obvious and insincere. Our goal is to be fully in your corner, not splitting attention or running the same play for two companies going after the same work.
We Take the Time to Actually Understand Your Business
Before we touch anything, we want to know:
- What services are most profitable
- What types of jobs you want more (or less) of
- Where your best customers come from
- What’s already been tried – and failed
Because without that context, marketing is just guessing with a budget attached.
We Focus on What Actually Grows Your Business
A lot of marketing today is obsessed with short-term metrics – clicks, rankings, cost per lead. And while those things do matter and can help guide a strategy, they’re not the whole picture. In service industries especially, a huge percentage of jobs come down to recognition and trust. People don’t always start from scratch – they hire the name they’ve seen before, someone their neighbor mentioned in passing, the company they remember when something breaks.
That’s why we focus heavily on brand visibility and consistency, so when the moment comes, you’re the obvious choice. And we don’t hide behind dashboards to prove it – we look at what actually matters: are you booking more work, is it the right kind of work, and is your business growing over time? Because at the end of the day, that’s what you’re actually paying for.
WHAT’S YOUR GUT TELLING YOU?
Does your current marketing company:
- Feel generic?
- Work with your competitors?
- Send report but doesn’t connect them to real growth?
- Leave you unsure of what’s actually happening?
If you hesistated answering any of those questions, you already know something is off.
What You Should Do Next
If you’re not sure what you’re getting, start here:
- Do I have a custom marketing strategy, or am I part of a system?
- Who else are you working with in my area or industry?
- What do I actually own? If we part ways, do I keep my domain name, website, content, and data?
- Where is my money actually going each month? What’s included and are there things I’m not taking advantage of?
- What are you doing differently for my business compared to your other clients?
- Can you clearly explain the strategy and how it translates into more jobs – not just more traffic?
If the answers are vague, unclear, or leave you with more questions than you started with, that’s your sign. You don’t need to be a marketing expert but you should understand what you’re paying for. And if you don’t, it might be time to make a change.
Want an Honest Opinion? We’ll Give You One.
If you want someone to take a look at what you’ve got and just tell you the truth, we got you. No fluff, no runaround – just a clear breakdown of what’s working, what’s not, and where you’re probably leaving opportunities on the table.
We may not be the right fit, and that’s fine. But at the very least, you’ll walk away knowing exactly where you stand and what to do next.
