THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA STORIES
You know those short social media clips? The ones that last just a few seconds at the top of your feed but highlight a special moment in a person’s or business’ day? Some have sound, while others have simple stickers. Some use gifs and some are just pictures or text. These snippets in time are social media stories and are available on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. They are fun, quick, and engaging and should be part of everyone’s social media strategy!
One key factor on why these stories are so popular is that they do not stay around for long. After 24 hours, they disappear, which creates the good ol’ “fear of missing out” (FOMO) causing people to ensure that they pay attention to the people and brands they really care about in order to not miss a thing.
These social media stories create a great opportunity to diversify the style of marketing content. Video and audio have a more personal quality to them. They create a way to engage with humans instead of a faceless brand simply trying to sell. It is used to take people on commutes, show off food, or highlight a moment during a great meeting. As we stay at home more and are inundated with online information, straight content (simple photos and text) is becoming more of a static marketing tool that does not WOW potential customers while video creates engagement and feedback. It’s the in-the-moment experiences that help followers feel connected to your brand.
There are many advantages of using Stories in your social media strategy:
- Increase brand awareness
- Constant engagement with your followers
- Cost effective
- Increase traffic to your web page
- Opportunity to reach younger audiences
Consider these practices and tips to create successful stories:
Integrate Your Stories and Posts
Since stories last only 24 hours, some followers might miss a particular story. If you don’t want your followers to miss a particular story, consider doing an announcement as a regular post letting them know ahead of time to watch for your story. You can also save this particular story to repost in your regular feed. Be careful though, you still want to keep some separation between regular posts and stories to ensure there is something “special” to your story.
Step Up Your @ Game
Just like in regular posts, you can mention users in your stories. Do it! The power of social media is to make connections! Your followers will look forward to being mentioned in your story.
Don’t Spend Too Much Time on Your Story
All you need for a successful story is a good idea and some creativity. Reuse imagery you already have and take advantage of the different tools that are offered.
Utilizing the tools provided on each social platform, you can increase engagement without increasing your workload.

Use Story Highlights
If there is a particular story that you want to stick around for longer, you can do that too! Highlights stay on your profile for as long as you want. Highlights create simple story categories. You want to use this feature strategically and not overwhelm your profile with too many highlights. Be strategic about which stories you keep!
There is no right or wrong way when creating social media stories. Stories represent a new and exciting way to present content, run marketing campaigns and interact with followers. Social media is all about storytelling and making connections. Whether you’re a small business, a start-up or an established brand, stories are the best way to reach customers with quick bits of content.
